On the occasion of the European Week of Waste Reduction 2018, the Conference “Integral Strategies for the reduction of food waste” was organized on November 22 at the School of International Trade of the University Pompeu Fabra (ESCI-UPF) in Barcelona.
During the morning session, the Ceres and Zero Cabin waste projects were presented. Both of them address waste management from a holistic perspective, with the associated impacts and reduction strategies. The CERES project showed the impacts associated with food production and consumption and food waste reduction strategies. While the LIFE Zero Cabin Waste project highlighted the typology of the waste generated on board to implement selective collection on airplanes, as well as the cossumption studies of the menus and experience on board by the passengers.
Finally, a roundtable was held with representatives from AECOC-Association of Manufacturers and Distributors-and the platform Aprofitem Els Alimentas, who contributed their experience in the field of food loss.
In the afternoon sesión, we visited the Packaging Sorting Plant of Hostalets de Pierola, where the different types of light packaging waste are received and classified for recycling.
