On May 25, a new follow-up meeting of the Life ZCW Project took place at Iberia headquarters in Madrid. The meeting was attended by representatives of all the partners involved in the project: Iberia, Ecoembes, ESCI-UPF, Ferrovial, BFC and Gate Gourmet, as well as personnel from Transfer Consultancy.
During the meeting, the status of the different ongoing actions was reviewed and the visit of the European Commission’s Project Adviser, which will take place on June 28 and 29, was commented as they will see the status of implementation of the Zero Cabin Waste Project.
During the visit, the Project Adviser will be able to check the separation of waste on board on the Brussels – Madrid flight and how these waste is received at Gate Gourmet and collected in the new compactor area. Later, at the Ferrovial waste sorting plant in Fuenlabrada, it will be possible to see how the different materials that have been deposited in the Recyclables compartment are separated automatically (mainly packaging and paper-cardboard waste). In this same plant, there is also the biodigester prototype in which the organic material coming from international flights (SANDACH category 1) will be treated as a pilot test.
The consortium is looking forward to these next months in which the waste collection protocol will be implemented on Iberia flights at European level.
